  16. <p>The Democrats keep tossing touchy bills at the White House
  17. </p>
  18. <p>    Even while the 102nd Congress raced to adjourn for the campaign
  19. finale, the Democrats somehow found time to stick controversial
  20. issues smack into President Bush's face. They didn't win many
  21. fights, but they did raise the discomfort level in the White
  22. House to record levels. To the Republicans' collective relief,
  23. the family-leave bill died on Wednesday when the House failed to
  24. override Bush's veto of the legislation, which the White House
  25. opposed as antibusiness. On Friday the House left Bush's
  26. abortion "gag rule" in place, again failing to muster the
  27. necessary two-thirds vote to overturn the legislation, which
  28. bars abortion counseling by nonphysician workers in federally
  29. funded family-planning clinics. The vote came the day after the
  30. Administration's curb on such funding took effect. Bush's
  31. Saturday veto of a bill reregulating cable TV just might be
  32. overridden; it was first passed by a more than 2-to-1 vote in
  33. both houses.
